Microbial colonization of the infant begins immediately after birth. Initial colonization is fortuitous depending on the first suitable organisms to arrive at a particular site and is influenced by the route of delivery, amount of vernix caseosa present on the infant, the type of nourishment (breast or formula milk) and the environment.
