ADF Chair Dr Aniello Iannuzzi chats with Dr Andrew Browning AM, an Australian-trained obstetrician, gynaecologist and senior fistula surgeon.
In 2001, Dr Browning went to work with Dr Catherine Hamlin in her first fistula hospital in Ethiopia and later took charge of the first regional Hamlin Fistula hospital. In 2009 he started his own charity, the Barbara May Foundation, to take the work that the Hamlins had started to the rest of Africa.
In the WMA Declaration of Geneva, members of the medical profession solemnly pledge to dedicate their life to the service of humanity. Dr Andrew Browning AM has honoured that pledge in a truly inspiring way, guided by his faith and his love of humanity.
In a world where the practice of medicine is being negatively disrupted by powerful political, financial and bureaucratic interests, Dr Browning reminds us of what a dedicated and skilled doctor can achieve when free to practise their profession.
As such, every medical student is encouraged to listen to this podcast and read Dr Browning’s book. And for every medical practitioner who is feeling overwhelmed by the third parties detrimentally intruding on the patient-doctor relationship, hopefully this podcast will re-energize them in their service of humanity.
