The Australian Doctors Federation has written to the Medical Board of Australia calling for the proposed mandatory health checks for medical practitioners aged 70 and over to be abandoned. The Medical Board’s proposal, based on an unpublished study of notifications, does not present a compelling evidence-based case for such an intervention, and the MBA / AHPRA already has the power to assess a medical practitioner’s fitness to practise at any time if any concerns are raised.

The ADF also calls for the MBA / AHPRA to introduce a Senior Active step down category of registration for doctors nearing the end of their medical careers.
